How to Pass a Prop Firm Challenge: A Journaling-First Approach
Most advice on passing a prop firm challenge is about finding a better strategy. That's usually the wrong focus. The traders who pass aren't the ones with a secret edge — they're the ones who don't beat themselves. Here's a journaling-first approach.
1. Respect the drawdown more than the target
Every challenge has a profit target and a max drawdown. The target is a finish line; the drawdown is a cliff. You fail by hitting the cliff, not by missing the finish line slowly. Trade like your only job is to stay away from the drawdown, and the target tends to take care of itself.
2. Fix your risk per trade in R
Decide before the challenge what 1R is — and never exceed it. If your max drawdown is 10R, you have a real, countable budget: ten full losses before you're out. Sizing in R (not dollars) makes that budget visible on every trade instead of something you discover too late.
3. Journal every trade during the challenge — especially the bad ones
This is where a journal earns its keep. Log each trade with its setup, risk, result, and whether you followed your rules. Mid-challenge, you can look back and catch the exact pattern that fails evaluations — risk creeping up after losses, trades outside your setups, sizing up to "make the target."
4. Separate variance from mistakes
When you take a loss, ask one question: did I follow my plan? If yes, it's just variance — do nothing differently. If no, that's the trade to study. Traders who blow challenges usually overreact to on-plan losses and underreact to rule breaks. Your journal keeps you honest about which is which.
5. Slow down near the target
Most challenges are lost in the last 20% before passing, when traders get anxious and force it. When you're close, cut your size, take only A+ setups, and let it come to you. The finish line doesn't have a time limit — the cliff doesn't move.
None of this requires a better strategy. It requires not making the avoidable mistakes — and the only reliable way to stop making them is to see them, which is what a journal is for.
