How to Find Your Trading Edge (And Actually Know You Have One)

"Find your edge" is the most repeated and least explained advice in trading. An edge isn't a feeling or a favorite setup — it's a measurable, positive expectancy that survives a decent sample of trades. Here's how to actually find yours.

An edge has a definition

You have an edge when a defined way of trading produces positive expectancy over a meaningful number of trades. Two words matter: defined (you can name the rules) and expectancy(the average R you make per trade is above zero). If you can't name the rules, you can't measure it — and if you can't measure it, you don't know you have it.

Step 1: Name your setups

Give every trade a specific setup label from a short, fixed list. Vague labels can't be measured. "Opening-range breakout" can; "it looked good" can't.

Step 2: Log enough trades

A handful of trades tells you nothing — variance dominates. You need a sample (think dozens per setup, not five) before the numbers mean anything. This is the boring part everyone skips, and it's the only part that produces certainty.

Step 3: Measure expectancy per setup

Now break your results down by setup. You'll almost always find that your overall results are a blend of one or two genuinely profitable setups and several that quietly lose money. That's the discovery: your edge is usually narrower than you think, and hiding inside your average.

Step 4: Do more of what works, cut what doesn't

Once you can see which setups carry positive expectancy and which drain it, the plan writes itself: concentrate on the winners, drop or fix the losers, and re-measure. That loop — measure, concentrate, re-measure — is what "developing an edge" actually means.

You can't do any of this from memory or a feeling. It requires trades logged consistently enough to break down by setup — which is exactly what FundedView does automatically.
